The Rise of AI Voice Cloning: A Personal Encounter with Its Dark Side

My brother handed his phone to me. “This is gonna seem weird,” he said. As a soothing female voice narrates an Instagram reel of a boy at a rally, I watched: “Following the recent outrage from a UK student, it seems to have sparked a symbol which has now amplified a deep-rooted crisis affecting the UK education system.” My jaw dropped—it’s my voice, or so I thought.

I was a YouTube news anchor; so used to hearing myself on the screen. But I hadn’t recorded that. The voice went on: “They’re making us learn about Islam and Muhammad in school. This is disgusting.” Chillingly, I had linked my voice to far-right propaganda. That’s how I realized the alarming capabilities of AI voice cloning.

What is AI Voice Cloning?

AI voice cloning is an audio Deepfakes: advanced algorithms mimic a person’s voice. In reality, it is one of the fastest-growing scams in 2024 and allows fraudsters to bypass security checks and even spreads disinformation. Victims like me usually don’t know until the damage is done.

The clip with my voice had been attached to a far-right YouTube channel that had 200,000 subscribers. Eight of its last 12 videos have used my voice, and one video has gained more than 10 million views so far. Although it sounds like me, subtle pacing inconsistencies give away that it’s actually AI-generated—a nuance most listeners will never pick up on.

Deepfakes Audio Expands End

The most insidious form of audio deep fakes are the most dangerous; the most telling example was that clip manipulated at the end of 2023 that attributed inflammatory remarks to London Mayor Sadiq Khan. These events just feed into decreasing institutional trust-58% of Britons claim to rarely trust politicians-and grant malign actors the ability to command narratives.

Not even celebrities are safe. Sir David Attenborough spoke out about his voice being used to convey biased news and Scarlett Johansson voiced objection over an AI version of her voice. Under current laws of privacy and copyright, the victim has little legal recourse to stand.

Fight Back Against Voice Misuse

Steps are now being undertaken to address the problem. Introduce legislation in the United States limiting the creation of audio without permission and the European Identity Theft Observatory System ETHOS, designing tools that can identify deep fakes. Experts are quick to point out though that regulation alone will not be a solution to this problem. He adds that the law presently in use is just a drama. A digital forensic expert named Hany Farid points out that if audio as presented by him is manipulative and triggers mass violence, it changes the election process of that particular country.

Technological ability that comes two-way

Although it is full of risks, AI voice cloning has its positive applications. The potential impact it made on Val Kilmer is restoring their voices, and similarly, it would help folks with speech impediments or keep loved ones’ voices around. Such benefits, however, come at a cost–strict ethical guidelines and consent.

For me, this experience of “losing one’s voice” has a completely different meaning. It is not just a matter of being silenced but rather losing control over the use of your voice. Therefore, with the advancement of AI, it has never been more crucial for our voices to be ours.
